Why are milestone birthdays important?
Milestone birthdays are the ones that have been put in the “notable” bucket depending on where you live. Most countries celebrate any birthday that ends in a zero because that’s an obvious “new decade/end of an era” birthday. Some countries celebrate sweet 16s, while others put the same importance on 15th or 18th birthdays. 21 is another big one, and starting the teen years at 13 is another one.
For adults, the birthdays that end in zero are usually the ones that make people take notice, because they’re natural times to look back and reflect on the previous decade. They also make you realize that you’re getting older because suddenly you have a new number in front of your age. This is also true for the birthdays that end in 5, but it’s the 0s that will get you. Then once you’re past 80 or 90, every birthday is a milestone!
It’s important to celebrate milestone birthdays to show the birthday person that they’re supported and cared for, especially when people get a lot older. If you have an elderly relative who’s in a nursing home or other care facility, remembering them on their birthdays will show them that you think they’re important, but you should also make sure to see them as often as you can on a non-birthday day! Birthdays should just be a little more special.

Party styles and themes.
There are a lot of ways that you can celebrate an 80th birthday. From a family dinner with your close relatives to a large gathering with a lot of guests, you can tailor the party to the preferences of the person you’re celebrating.
As far as party themes go, there’s no reason that you have to choose one specific theme. You can combine themes like “80 and Fabulous” with floral decorations, or go with no specific theme at all and just have a party with no specific limits on decor or colors.
If you want to have something more themed, you could go with a “Back To The 80’s” party that’s a full-out themed event with colors and styles from the 1980s. Or you could do something like “the day you were born” with the theme and decor based on the year that the guest of honor was born.
It could be a surprise birthday party if the recipient is into that (a lot of people aren’t,) or you could go the other route and have the guest of honor help plan the whole thing. This is another thing that you should tailor to the person whose birthday it is, because some people might not even want a party at all, and some will want the biggest event they can get away with.

What kinds of gifts to give someone who’s turning 80.
In your 80s you’ve probably been retired for a while, but you might also be working a part time job. You might be super active, but you might be experiencing mobility problems that limit your activity. On the other hand, people in their 80s can also be totally healthy and not have many problems at all. One of my husband’s golf buddies is in his 80s, still works part time, and only has minor health things pop up that don’t affect him too much.
Basically, take the individual person into account when you’re buying them a gift. If they have health problems don’t get them something that will conflict with that, give them something that goes with one of their hobbies instead. Be thoughtful about it and don’t get a chocolate gift basket for someone who’s diabetic…Just make it a gift that’s really for them, not something generic.
