In this interview, I talked with Sherri, owner of Sherri O Designs, and Sherri O Dyeworks on Etsy.

Tell us a little about your shop and who you are.
I’m Sherri and I own Sherri O Dyeworks on Etsy. My website is SherriODesigns.com.
I sell hand-dyed scarves, linens, and home decor.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
On Etsy as Sherri O Dyeworks since 2018.

What’s the hardest part about selling online?
I think it’s knowing what people will want to buy.

What’s your daily routine like?
So much of running a handmade business has nothing to do with making products!
I start my day by reviewing what needs to be done… orders to fill, upcoming events to prepare for, administrative tasks to be dealt with, and items to be made and/or dyed.
From that point, it’s just a matter of doing what needs to be done, I don’t really have a set routine.
While it varies from day to day and season to season, I probably spend about 1/3 of my time on administrative activities (planning, finances, education, etc.), 1/3 on marketing (product photography, social media, creating listings), and 1/3 on actually making the products I sell.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start selling online?
Getting seen is hard work! Just because you put up a website or list items on Etsy doesn’t mean people will find and buy them, even if it’s a great product.
You have to put in the time and effort to learn about SEO, algorithms, and social media; and you have to keep putting yourself out there consistently.
