I see a lot of people in the US put candles in their windows throughout the holiday season, but in Ireland the tradition is to put a candle in the window on Christmas Eve. This comes from the 17th and 18th century when Catholicism wasn’t allowed to be practiced, and Catholic priests had to sneak into town to do the mass. At Christmas time people would put a candle in the window to show them that they were welcome in their homes, so it was a signal to get around the religious laws. It’s carried on now as a symbol of Christmas spirit.
