If you know someone who likes to watch birds at their home feeder, or who doesn’t have a feeder but would enjoy one, these are some gift ideas for them. Backyard bird watchers are a lot more common than birdwatchers who take binoculars and go out to the woods to hunt for them, so bird watching accessories are a good gift for anyone.

Bird identifier book.
The first thing you’ll need for backyard birdwatching is a book to tell you what you’re looking at. I like the field guides by Stan Tekiela because they’re arranged by US state and each book is divided up by the color of the bird. If you see a yellow one, you look up the yellow section to find out what it is (it’s probably a goldfinch.) Get the Virginia Guide on Amazon and click on the author’s name to see all of his state guides. (affiliate link)
Squirrel-proof birdfeeders.
I have bird feeders and squirrels, and I’ve had plenty of feeders get ripped apart by raccoons, but they don’t bother these. The Squirrel Buster brand is the only one that I’ve tried that actually keeps the squirrels off, because of the way they’re built. They come in different sizes, and the birds in my yard like the cheapest one best, so that’s a plus. Here’s a video comparing the three sizes of feeders that I have: Squirrel Buster Bird Feeders

Outdoor metal garden art.
This cool blue heron yard sign is made from metal and can be put in a garden to add a bird theme to the decor. It’s handmade by Ironstone Steel and would be a really nice addition to a garden. To see more gifts for people who like to garden, click here.

Bird seed.
This is the basic supply that they’ll need to replace, so giving a bird lover a bag of birdseed is actually a good gift even if it seems a little odd. Depending on how many birds come to the backyard, you can go through seed pretty fast. I try out a lot of different birdseeds because they attract different birds, and one of my favorites is this no-mess mix that doesn’t have shells in it.
I thought the birds would eat it really quickly, but it took a lot longer to go through the whole bag than I thought. Plus, you’re not paying for the weight of the shells, so that’s a bonus.
Bird mug.
This bird mug with backyard songbirds is cute and will represent most of the birds that show up on a regular basis. I get all of these in my backyard every day, and at different times of the year there are more of them when they’re migrating. See it here on Zazzle.

Suet feeder.
A little suet feeder with a roof will keep snow and rain off of suet
